  • HSBC Wades Into Water Index Market; Investment Products to Follow

    (Wed, 12 Nov 2008 20:25:43 -0500)

    IndexUniverse submits:

HSBC (HBC) has launched the HSBC Optimised Global Water Index, and plans to bring out a number of investment products pegged to the concentrated global water benchmark. The HSBC Optimised Global Water Index is a modified market-cap-weighted index comprising a maximum of 20 stocks. It exists in two versions: the Global Water Total Return Index, which includes ex-dividend adjustments; and the Global Water Price Return Index, which excludes the effects of dividends.

Index holdings must be available to foreign investors and have a minimum average daily traded value over three months of $1 million. Index companies must be...

    (Thu, 23 Oct 2008 05:39:44 -0400)

    Chance Carson submits:

Many of our readers at  AboutETFs.com enjoyed our earlier article The Complete List of Currency ETFs and have been requesting a similar list for commodities. So, once again, by popular demand, here is our newest list, The Complete List of Commodity ETFs and ETNs, as of October 20, 2008.

  • Water ETFs Managing to Tread Above Market

    (Sun, 05 Oct 2008 09:47:01 -0400)

    IndexUniverse submits:

While investors debate the merits of dipping into alternative energy markets, a niche set of exchange-traded funds is holding up even better than their more diversified rivals.

Four different ETFs tracking companies involved in servicing and powering water systems are outperforming broader rivals. In the case of two of those, the gap has been quite large throughout the year.

  • Alternatives and Absolute Return with ETFs

    (Thu, 10 Jul 2008 04:16:21 -0400)

    David McMillan submits:

Over the years, absolute return approaches have formed the cornerstone of many of our client portfolios, traditionally through hedge fund of fund vehicles and separate account managers. It was with great fanfare then, that we rolled out a range of new ETF portfolios to our clients earlier this year that removed many of the down side operational risks to hedge fund investments with the potential of achieving absolute returns.

By creating risk based portfolios of approximately 20 ETFs with the liquidity, transparency, low cost and tax efficiency that the ETF world allows us to deliver, investors are able...

  • Green Commodities for a Complete Green Portfolio

    (Thu, 03 Jul 2008 10:29:58 -0400)

    Matthew Moscardi submits:

For those of you that have been reading the Smug Investments blog, Smugly Green, you will be familiar with our total green portfolio concept. For non readers, the ever expanding universe of green, light green, and responsible ETFs are making it possible to start thinking out of the box when creating your green portfolio. In order to do it right and be properly diversified, the notion of green may have to be stretched, but it's well worth the effort to create a more fully sustainable investment portfolio that doesn't necessarily sacrifice performance.

    The obvious...

  • Two Water ETFs Actually Correlated to Market Tide

    (Wed, 21 May 2008 04:13:17 -0400)

    SMS_logoSmart Guy Stocks submits:

Eleven months ago I recommended the water ETFs PowerShares Water Resources (PHO) and PowerShares Global Water Portfolio (PIO). I was specifically seeking an asset class uncorrelated to the broader stock market. However, I think too many traders and funds are buying and selling these assets based on the same signals as broader market indicators. Therefore, the investments have not met my thesis and need to be sold.

This is a good lesson for investing. We have many prospective investments, yet only enough cash to buy a tiny fraction of assets. As a result, we...

  • Under The Radar News - Friday

    (Fri, 16 May 2008 09:57:27 -0400)

    • Move over Intel, AMD... Via Technologies upcoming Isaiah CPU could put an end to the Intel (INTC)/AMD (AMD) duopoly. Isaiah consumes 3.5 watts to Atom's 0.6-2.5, but its Superscalar design should allow it higher performance. Wal-Mart (WMT) will sell a $398 Everex gBook using the chip.
    • From Blockbuster's earnings call. Blockbuster (BBI) CEO Jimmy Keyes on proposed acquisition of Circuit City (CC): "We will not proceed with the transaction unless it makes sense both strategically and financially and also creates significant value for our shareholders... We remain confident that our core business is healthy and we remain confident in...

    • What's Really in the Water?

      (Mon, 31 Mar 2008 09:09:00 -0400)

      The Stalwart submits:

The WSJ takes a look at water investments, which, despite a seemingly rock-solid thesis, haven't held up as well as other scarce commodity investments:

Water use drops in a recession: 40% of fresh water in the U.S. is consumed in industrial applications. That is why many water utilities have fallen recently on recession fears.

    • Investable Water: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

      (Tue, 04 Mar 2008 06:21:26 -0500)

One of my major investment themes for the next decade is the growing water shortage issue and need to upgrade the global water infrastructure. Many will not consider water a commodity, but I sure do and believe it can become as important as oil in the years ahead. Oil is important to everyday life, but without water humans cannot live very long.

The water investment theme is not new, but it still has yet to gain traction as a long-term investment option. Investors looking to take advantage of the billions that will be spent on water investing have several options. There...

    • Some Exposure to Staple Commodities Makes Sense

      (Tue, 27 Nov 2007 03:48:36 -0500)

      roger nusbaumRoger Nusbaum submits:

I read a very thorough article about the water theme and water ETFs on Seeking Alpha over the weekend, and I was reminded how bleak the numbers surrounding potable water are, and how compelling the theme is. I have owned PowerShares Water Resources ETF (PHO) since its second or third day of trading, and while I have thought a better mousetrap will come at some point, the actual theme will be a part of the portfolios I manage for a long time...
