  • Pharmas and Biotech: Vying for Outsize Insulin Profits

    (Thu, 20 Nov 2008 14:09:21 -0500)

Nektar Therapeutics (NKTR) has been struggling since 2007, when Pfizer (PFE) discontinued selling Nektar's Exubera inhaled insulin because of disappointing sales. Then Novartis (NVS) stepped in and bought Nektar’s pulmonary medicine delivery systems. It clearly sees profit where Pfizer didn’t. Nektar jettisoned its insulin inhaler, but still happily reported on its Q308 conference call that it had

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is still about 15% above the bear market closing low on October 9th, 2002, but half of the index's current members are now down since then.  Below we highlight each Dow member's percentage change since 10/9/02.  As shown, McDonald's (MCD) is up the most at 241%, followed by Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Exxon Mobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX), and Caterpillar (CAT).  Surprisingly, financial giant JP Morgan (JPM) is also one of the best performers with a gain of 108%.

In a research note to clients on Friday, Deutsche Bank's Barbara Ryan unearthed this posting that went up Thursday on the government's web site for clinical trials.

    (Thu, 13 Nov 2008 13:30:32 -0500)

    Mike Huckman submits:

On a very weak big pharma tape, shares of Schering-Plough (SGP) started to rally Wednesday morning. As I wrote this, the only other stock in the sector that was trading higher—albeit fractionally—is Wyeth (WYE), because Goldman Sachs added it to its "Conviction Buy List." (For those unfamiliar with it, the CBL means the analyst is pounding the table...

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

Below we highlight consensus analyst price targets for the 30 stocks that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average. As shown, Alcoa's (AA) price target is currently the highest above its actual price at 52%. AA is trailed by [[HPQ]] and [[INTC]] with price targets 40% above current levels.

General Motors (GM) is the only stock in the index with a price target that is lower than its actual price. With the record of analysts these days, price targets should be taken with a grain of salt, but we thought...

  • Merck Continues to Thin Out

    (Thu, 23 Oct 2008 13:46:33 -0400)

    derek loweDerek Lowe submits:

As everyone knows, Merck (MRK) announced some big job cuts Wednesday – 7,200 positions, around 10% of the work force. It’s worth looking at the details of these, because they differ a bit from what’s been going on at some other companies.

For one thing, the company doesn’t seem to be exiting any one therapeutic area, as Pfizer (PFE) has, or rearranging their whole R&D structure the way [[GSK]] is doing. Merck just seems to be thinning things out across the whole organization. And that...

  • Fitch lowers Merck rating outlook to negative from stable

    (Mon, 17 Nov 2008 15:52:32 -0500)

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Fitch Ratings said Monday it lowered the ratings outlook for Merck & Co. to negative from stable because top-selling drugs will lose patent protection over the next few years.
