Colgate-Palmolive (CL) is a relative latecomer to the downturn; shares have tumbled almost 25% over the past month as investors fret its once-touted exposure to emerging markets. Barron's notes that shares - $63 - trade at the same level as 1999, despite earnings having more than doubled. "In punishing New York-based Colgate for its reliance on foreign sales, investors are ignoring the company's defensive characteristics, not to mention its projected double-digit earnings growth, this year and next."
Even if we discount the somewhat aged argument that, "people have to have toothpaste," shares may...
At Valuecruncher we have previously looked at Proctor & Gamble (PG). Competitor Colgate Palmolive (CL) announced strong Q3 results at the end of October. $CL is trading close to a 52-week low at US$63.55. So how does the current share price of $CL look from an intrinsic value perspective?
Fed cuts to 1%. In a unanimous decision, the Fed dropped its key fed funds target to 1% from 1.5%, while the discount rate fell to 1.25% from 1.75%. "The pace of economic activity appears to have slowed markedly, owing importantly to a decline in consumer expenditures," it said. The Fed hinted it may not be done with rate cuts: "... downside risks to growth remain. The Committee will monitor economic and financial developments carefully and will act as needed to promote sustainable economic growth and price stability." New in its statement...
The headlines before the market were so negative that they were already talking about what it took for the market stops to be triggered, as if they knew that the markets were going to drop over 1000 points.
These headlines are designed to stir up fear among investors causing panic, and I have to say that it works quite well. I was barely in the markets before today’s open and it got me thinking crazy thoughts about what could happen and what I should do about my portfolio. Remember to focus on what is happening rather than...
Six of the biggest publicly traded U.S. ethanol producers have lost more than $8.7bn (£5bn) in market value since the peak of the boom in mid-2006 and the beginning of this month, according to the Financial Times. The newspaper focuses on Aventine Energy (AVR), VeraSun (VSE) and Pacific Ethanol (PEIX), where one of Bill Gates' private investment firms lost millions in 2005.
All of these stocks have seen considerable short covering three to four months. The percentage of AVR's Market Cap out on loan to short investors has decreased from 19% in July, down to 6% now. VeraSun has...
In the perverse climate of suspicion that keeps dominating the financial system, many investors instinctively have or may want to pull out of the equity markets. Realistically, no one wants to stay in what seems to be endless market deterioration, however, all the necessary ingredients now appear to be in place to stabilize banks and financial markets. More importantly, the decline will eventually subside over time. In our assessment, staying on course can, and will prove to be the best decision.
J.P. Morgan (JPM) has just come out with a list of stock recommendations collectively called “The...
Bank of America (BAC) – The pain continues to trickle down the pipeline for Bank of America whose shares have slipped a further 7.2% to $22.03 today. Options activity at 330,000 is huge for the morning and there are some chunky amounts in play. It has to be said that buyers and sellers are evident throughout today’s activity. We usually try to spot who is initiating the trade, but the two-way activity today makes it hard to discern. We can report that the October 22.5 and 25 strike calls saw more than 40,000 lots trade in total, while the 20...

Need some good news? Here’s something: Even as consumer confidence hits historic lows, consumers did not savage companies in the latest survey by the University of Michigan’s American Customer Satisfaction Index.

KGaA (HEN.XE) Thursday reported a 58% drop in third-quarter net profit and lowered its 2008 earnings guidance. Henkel cut back its growth outlook for adjusted earnings before interest and taxes, or EBIT, for the year to about 10% from a previous forecast at the lower end of a mid-teen percentage range. Henkel's adjusted EBIT was EUR1.37 billion in 2007.
