Andrew Schmitt submits: There was an excellent editorial on Monday by Lee Goldberg that explores the lack of new R&D in SONET/SDH and PDH chip sets. While I don?t agree with the conclusion, it is a worthy topic of exploration and he highlights something missed by the mainstream tech media.
The networking industry may be about to hit a hidden speed bump as the number of semiconductor companies actively involved with developing products to support SONET/SDH, PDH, and other TDM-based technologies can now be counted on one hand.
Richard Shaw (QVM Group) submits: ?Terror-free? investing is a relatively new form of investing that excludes from portfolios those companies that have identifiable business activities in countries that support terrorism.
Just as the South Africa disinvestment movement decades ago caused companies to terminate operations there, the theory is that terror-free investing will cause companies to stop doing business in or with countries considered to be state sponsors of terror.
The Missouri State Treasurer gave birth to the movement in June 2006 when she set up a terror-free investment fund within...
FP Trading Desk submits: Shares of Zarlink Semiconductor Inc. (ZL) jumped on Tuesday after the Ottawa-based company said it was buying privately-held Legerity Inc. for US$134.5-million in cash.
The company, formerly Avanced Micro Devices Inc.?s (AMD) communication products division, focuses on voice integrated circuits and has nearly 500 patents, according to Raymond James analyst Sera Kim.
The deal is consistent with Zarlink?s strategy to try and dominate in its target niches and should be good for long term growth, she said in a research note.
FP Trading Desk submits: Zarlink Semiconductor (ZL) shares are down nearly 10% on both the Toronto and New York exchanges Thursday after announcing lower-than-expected fourth quarter results for fiscal 2007.
The company reported revenues of US$32 million, down 6.6% quarter-over-quarter and 18.4% year-over-year, and an earnings per share loss of US1¢.
Despite the disappointing results, Raymond James analyst Sera Kim maintained her "outperform" rating on the stock and left her US$2.75 price target, which represents upside of almost 50%, unchanged.
Andrew Schmitt submits: We?ve been significant investors in Zarlink (ZL) since this fall and feel it is one of the stronger examples of an undervalued comm-semi asset poised to benefit from an inevitable consolidation in the industry. Followers of this site know this is a key theme for us.
Zarlink CEO Kirk Mandy managed to echo our logic in the Zarlink FQ307 financial results conference call last week:
At the equipment OEM level, we have Alcatel and Lucent merging, Eriksson buy Marconi and Redback, Nokia and...
Larry MacDonald submits: The Contra The Heard newsletter for the fourth quarter of 2006 came in the mail last week. Eat your heart out Warren Buffett and all you other gurus.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Zarlink Semiconductor Inc. said late Monday it has agreed to acquire privately held Legerity Holdings Inc., a developer of voice integrated circuits, for $134.5 million. Austin, Texas-based Legerity has 216 employees and had 2006 revenue of $113 million. Ottawa-based Zarlink expects the deal to add to its earnings and provide annualized synergies of $7 million. Zarlink plans to fund the acquisition through a combination of its cash resources and, as required, draw down on a bridge facility of up to $50 million.
