NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- High-yielding, emerging-market currencies rallied against the U.S. dollar on Monday, boosted by a surge in risk appetite. The Turkish lira soared 6% against the greenback, the Brazilian real was up 4.5%, the Mexican peso was up 2.4% and the South African rand was up 1.3%. "There is no positive news that's specific to any of these countries, but markets are simply riding high on the optimism regarding [Tim] Geithner, the Citigroup plan, and the likely U.S. fiscal stimulus plan being discussed," said Win Thin, senior currency strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman, in a note.
