  • Eight Stocks to Get You Through the Bleakness

    (Wed, 03 Dec 2008 04:04:12 -0500)

    Carol Flake Chapman submits:

Apparently we've been in a recession for a year now, and the layoffs are beginning to ripple out from malls and car dealerships to factories. Folks are cutting back, and stores are closing down. A local radio DJ spent a morning playing songs evoking the Great Depression, topped by Tom Waits grinding out "Buddy Can You Spare a Dime" with grim conviction. I inherited a Depression-ready mentality from my parents, and I've already had visions of bread lines and soup kitchens dancing in my head, rather than sugarplums.

Giving in to my pessimism and to dire predictions...

  • Private Label Food Will Likely Be King for 2009

    (Thu, 20 Nov 2008 05:36:24 -0500)

    Rick Shea submits:

Private Label manufacturers recently met for a few days at the PLMA trade show in Chicago. The mood on the economy was very dour but attendees were upbeat with the prospects for the private label food industry in 2009. Private Label clearly is gaining share among price conscious consumers. Consumers hit by job losses, disappearing 401(k)s and IRAs and daily depressing economic headlines are more price sensitive than ever before. Consumers are modifying their shopping habits for food in two major ways.

First, consumers are shopping more at...

  • Ralcorp Holdings: Enjoy a Good Bowl of Recession

    (Thu, 13 Nov 2008 03:25:35 -0500)

Scott Rothbort, LakeView Asset Management, LLCScott Rothbort submits:

Bloomberg TV ran a nice story on Ralcorp (RAH) yesterday morning. RAH produces generic foods and recently purchased Post cereals from Kraft (KFT).

In this economy more consumers are going to trade down to cheaper (or as we say in economics, inferior) priced goods. RAH should benefit from this shift in consumer purchasing habits.

  • Stocks Potentially Impacted by SEC's Enforcement of Regulation SHO

    (Thu, 18 Sep 2008 05:00:01 -0400)

    J Clinton Hill submits:

Yesterday the SEC announced its intent to enforce Regulation SHO which became effective on September 7, 2004. The rule was enacted to "establish uniform locate and delivery requirements in order to address problems associated with failures to deliver, including potentially abusive “naked” short selling (i.e., selling short without having borrowed the securities to make delivery)".

There are many arguments against short sellers, but in fairness they do facilitate liquidity and bring discipline to the markets by punishing the securities of poorly managed companies. Some do not like to admit it for fear of killing the goose that...

  • U.S. Food Companies Poised For Earnings Growth

    (Wed, 20 Aug 2008 04:39:49 -0400)

    Rick Shea submits:

US based food manufacturers have been noticeably silent on Wall Street in the last year. Normally as market volatility increases to the downside and talk of recession dominates the headlines, interest in food companies climbs dramatically due to their predictable earnings and safe haven status. The rationale has always been "Even in a recession, people still have to eat."

Unfortunately, this time around food companies have been caught in the crossfires of unprecedented commodity inflation. Most Wall Street firms and retail investors have held off increasing their positions in food companies until they see how the companies are able to...

  • Ralcorp's New Cereal Acquisition Poses Challenges

    (Wed, 19 Mar 2008 08:34:03 -0400)

    Rick Shea submits:

Ralcorp's (RAH) recent purchase of Kraft Foods (KFT) Post cereal division is scheduled to be completed in mid 2008. With the purchase, Ralcorp faces several key challenges in integrating the two companies and transforming the company into a successful manufacturer of branded and private label food products. Ralcorp is most known for its portfolio of private label food products in the cereal, cookie, cracker, frozen bakery and syrup categories. Ralcorp is no stranger to acquisitions, having recently purchased Bloomfield Bakers for $140 million and Cottage Bakery for $170 million. However, Ralcorp's acquisition of Post cereals for $2.8...

  • Kraft's Post Cereals to Merge With Ralcorp in $2.6B Deal (update)

    (Thu, 15 Nov 2007 07:34:26 -0500)

Kraft Foods (KFT) said Thursday it has agreed to merge its Post Cereals unit with Ralcorp (RAH) for approximately $2.6 billion in stock, including debt assumption, ending months of speculation after Kraft said in August it was exploring selling its cereal business (full story). The deal, Ralcorp said, "Creates a larger, stronger business with a portfolio of businesses balanced between branded, private-label and frozen bakery food products [and] increases 2007 sales by 50% to $3.3 billion a year from $2.2 billion, with Post cereals accounting for approximately 32% of total annual sales." Kraft will distribute ownership of Post to...

  • Kraft Near Deal to Sell Cereal Business to Ralcorp -- WSJ

    (Mon, 05 Nov 2007 06:43:10 -0500)

Kraft Foods is near a deal to sell its Post Cereals business to Ralcorp Holdings, a private-label maker of cereals and other foods, for about $2.8B, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday. The Journal reported in mid-August, that Kraft was exploring a sale of the Post business with sources indicating it could fetch up to $3B. Investor Nelson Peltz, who owns 3% of Kraft, has urged CEO Irene Rosenfeld to sell the stagnant Post operations. Citing market research data, the Journal noted that sales of Post cereals at food retailers...
