  • The Magic Formula's Top 20 Low P/S Ratio Stocks

    (Tue, 02 Dec 2008 10:44:47 -0500)

    Steve Alexander submits:

Continuing a recent thread of articles adding other well known value investing criteria to Magic Formula stocks, in this post, we'll take a look at the price-to-sales ratio. For those interested, previously we've looked at Magic Formula stocks with high dividend yields, as well as Magic Formula stocks with strong relative strength.

Dividend yield and relative strength are both fairly popular and well known screening criteria. Stocks with high dividend yields not only indicate a potential undervalued condition, but also pay cold hard cash to their shareholders that can compound over time. Relative strength...

  • Black Friday Traffic Can Be Misleading

    (Sun, 30 Nov 2008 04:36:10 -0500)

mkaminisMarkos Kaminis (Wall St. Greek) submits:

We expect that when the final tally is taken this year measuring Black Friday business, it will present an illusion. We anticipate traffic measurements to be heavy, but for all the wrong reasons. So, be wary of the headlines that read, "Shopping Not So Dire. Stores Packed." Don't let such news lull you into thinking the retail share selloff or commercial real estate bearishness has been overdone. It has not.

Black Friday traffic can be misleading. Local news channels and newspapers will likely...

  • Dispelling the Gloom: Examining a Few Healthy Companies

    (Tue, 28 Oct 2008 13:41:37 -0400)

    Rick Newman submits:

Warren Buffett's optimism hasn't exactly moved markets lately. Since Buffett announced in mid-October that he is bullish on U.S. stocks, the markets have fallen, not risen. Buffett's not complaining - he can buy even lower.

But that's little comfort to the rest of us. In a recentNew York Times article, the legendary investor made it clear that he's not making any predictions about whether the stock markets will rise or fall in a month or a year. Instead, he has long pointed out that it's smart to invest in healthy businesses that provide something people need...

    • PowerShares Dynamic Retail ETF Finds Bargains in Discount Retailers

      (Sun, 07 Sep 2008 10:16:03 -0400)

      Don Dion submits:

Despite an extended economic slowdown and poor consumer spending numbers, PowerShares Dynamic Retail Portfolio ETF (PMR) gained momentum over the summer. While some analysts believe that the worst is yet to come for retail, an increasing number of investors believe that some retailers are oversold and that these names are now at bargain prices. While much of the retail news remains gloomy, PMR’s year-to-date returns are in positive territory—up 1.21% year to date as of August 27 in the midst of a difficult economy.

PMR remained stagnant in our Sector Momentum Rankings for much of June...

      • Patent peace. Qualcomm and Nokia put an end to their patent battles - a move that could benefit both companies. Financial terms weren't disclosed, but the companies described it as a 15-year agreement that includes Nokia making an up-front payment, and paying ongoing royalties - which implies NOK may now become a QCOM customer. "This is a landmark deal," Lehman's Timothy Luke said. "This removes a ton of uncertainty from the industry." He estimates NOK should owe QCOM about $600M for 2008 alone. In early pre-market trading, QCOM is...
