    SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc. shares surged 16% to $1.43 in Monday morning trade after the company said it has signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint venture with a "major automaker in China" for the development of hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles, manufacture of gaseous fuel components, and integration of advanced propulsion systems. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Quantum Fuel is based in Irvine, Calif.
