  • 3Com: Back on Sale

    (Sun, 09 Nov 2008 07:31:33 -0500)

    Jeremy Richards submits:

After hitting a high of $2.85 this week, 3Com (COMS) pulled back over 20%, mostly on Cisco (CSCO)-related pessimism. But, 3Com sees no slowing on its earnings and cash flow. In fact, 3Com has beat analyst estimates the last 4 consecutive quarters by an average of 95%! Cisco trades at 11.5 times forward P/E, while 3Com only trades at 5.7 times forward P/E. Per Vectorvest, the forecast growth rate on 3Com is 25% while Cisco is only 3%. Thus, in terms of valuation, 3Com represents a tremendous value within the sector.

    sramana mitraSramana Mitra submits:

On Monday, 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ: COMS) reported strong first quarter results that not only beat all estimates but also were a sign of significant turnaround progress. It was the first time since 2000 that 3Com has reported quarterly GAAP profit. 3Com attributed the profit to higher sales, lower costs, and a patent dispute settlement.

Just last week, I placed 3Com on my list of Top 10 Networking Stocks. I have always believed that 3Com’s low-cost strategy is its major asset, and new CEO Bob...

    • Bernanke beseeches. Despite our best efforts, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress Tuesday, global financial markets remain under extraordinary stress. "Action by the Congress is urgently required to stabilize the situation and avert what otherwise could be very serious consequences for our financial markets and for our economy.... Removing these assets from institutions' balance sheets will help to restore confidence...

    • 3Com: A Rare Gem in Today's Market

      (Mon, 15 Sep 2008 04:32:41 -0400)

      Jeremy Richards submits:

In today's market, the majority of companies fall into one a few categories. First and foremost in the news are the financials, which are writing down over-inflated assets from previous "Gain on Sale " Accounting. That accounting is otherwise known as cocaine accounting, because it gave them short-term earnings boosts and the delayed crashes which have been exemplified by Bear Stearns, Merrill (MER), and Lehman (LEH), just to name a few.

The second major category includes most companies which are pessimistic on their growth prospects and are lowering future guidance because of the economic repercussions of the housing market...

    • 3 Possible Deep Value Investments

      (Sun, 24 Aug 2008 06:44:49 -0400)

      Investment U submits:

Protecting investment principal and your profits should be a concern in any market, much less a bear market. Contrarian investors looking for deep value investments can find themselves walking a tightrope between "buying on the cheap," and "buying garbage."

And in the down markets like we've been in, it can be hard to distinguish between the two.

However, complications arose when the U.S. government expressed reservation about the deal and the possible breach of national security.

    • Nine Stocks Selling Under $3 a Share

      (Sun, 03 Aug 2008 09:35:02 -0400)

      Stockerblog submits:

The book value of a stock, in simple terms, is what a shareholder would get per share if all the assets of the company ere sold of, all the debts paid off, and the remaining cash distributed among all the shareholders. The ratio that is used is the Price to Book ratio. The lower the number, the better. It means that you are buying the companies net assets at a lower price. If the Price to Book is below 1, it means that the shares are selling for less than the the net worth of the company.
