  • Auto Parts Retailers Outperform

    (Sun, 02 Nov 2008 09:51:21 -0500)

    Ryan Barnes submits:

While the auto industry propels itself into the abyss, the parts retailers like AutoZone (AZO) and O’Reilly Automotive (ORLY) are seeing their value proposition become more relevant in the marketplace. As credit remains tight and new car sales plummet, more and more people are putting off major purchases in favor of repair and/or band-aid projects for their cars.

I wrote about this trend earlier in the month, highlighting O’Reilly as my favorite in the group because there’s a lot of improvement they can bring to recent acquisition...

    • Four Ways to Profit From Tight Auto Lending

      (Sun, 19 Oct 2008 03:14:42 -0400)

ab analytical servicesAlan Brochstein, CFA submits:

While everyone is painfully aware of the credit crunch, especially with respect to the housing market, investors are perhaps less familiar with another spigot run dry: automobile lending.  Leasing has died, the auto manufacturers have shut down or curtailed lending and most third-party providers of capital to the market have retrenched.

Automobiles are big ticket items that are generally bought on credit. Borrowers are strapped, and lenders are in retreat.  It's no wonder that the outlook for the auto industry is so bleak even...

    • Pep Boys: Staggering Potential for Improvement

      (Mon, 15 Sep 2008 07:45:57 -0400)

      Mark Krieger submits:

Pep Boys (PBY) does not stand up too well with its competitors from an earnings perspective, but maybe that's a good thing, as it creates the potential for mammoth progress to unfold. The last time the shares were at these depressed levels, they promptly rallied almost 500% to the $30 vicinity. Will history repeat itself? It often does, and this time around the company is leaner and meaner, so instead of a five banger, a possible ten banger could be in the cards.

The Competition: The O'Reilly Group (ORLY), Auto Zone (AZO) and Advance Auto Parts (AAP) are PBY's...

      (Wed, 03 Dec 2008 03:11:53 -0500)

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Goldman Sachs downgraded Salzgitter to neutral from buy and Acerinox to sell from neutral as part of a note in which it cut 2009 steel price forecasts by 65 euros a metric ton to 495 euros a ton. "Approximately half this reduction reflects lower assumed iron ore and coking coal prices from April 1, 2009. The balance reflects our expectation of lower shipping costs for raw materials, and lower-priced competing steel imports into Europe," the broker said. It kept a conviction buy on ArcelorMittal .

MELBOURNE (MarketWatch) -- BHP Billiton Ltd. said Wednesday it is cutting manganese production from its Samancor manganese joint venture operations with Anglo American PLC (AAL.LN) by more than 20% as a slow down in steelmaking crimps demand. BHP has been the slowest of the major diversified miners to cut production in response to slowing demand and falling prices, but Chief Executive Marius Kloppers last week signaled it is now prepared to cut output from operations that look set to be cash negative for some time.
