  • Retail Getting Slammed

    (Thu, 04 Dec 2008 15:05:30 -0500)

Third Party Feed: Media Tech Analyst submits:

I keep tabs on the what occurs with retail because it is the first sign of consumer weakness, which in my view, gives me a first read into what lies ahead for the media and technology companies, even those solely dependent on enterprise revenues. Doesn't look good. Also, doesn't look good for the online retail names, that is unless the assumption can be made that online is cannibalizing offline sales at an accelerated pace.

    From the Wall Street Journal:

U.S. retailers reported some of the weakest sales figures in years for November, which...

  • Options Trader: Thursday Outlook

    (Thu, 04 Dec 2008 10:11:27 -0500)

    Phil Davis submits:

    Yesterday was perfect!

We got our test of 8,200, which held, then we broke through 8,400, tested it, held a higher low and then went through it to make our goal at 8,600. Of course, these are moves that used to take a week. but we’re getting used to the violent, intra-day nature in the market. In fact, at 1:19PM, with the Dow at 8,464, I was able to lay out the moves for the rest of the day, saying: "Lots...

  • Eight Stocks to Get You Through the Bleakness

    (Wed, 03 Dec 2008 04:04:12 -0500)

    Carol Flake Chapman submits:

Apparently we've been in a recession for a year now, and the layoffs are beginning to ripple out from malls and car dealerships to factories. Folks are cutting back, and stores are closing down. A local radio DJ spent a morning playing songs evoking the Great Depression, topped by Tom Waits grinding out "Buddy Can You Spare a Dime" with grim conviction. I inherited a Depression-ready mentality from my parents, and I've already had visions of bread lines and soup kitchens dancing in my head, rather than sugarplums.

Giving in to my pessimism and to dire predictions...

  • Sears Holdings' Squandered Opportunity

    (Wed, 03 Dec 2008 03:06:55 -0500)

    Chad Brand submits:

The last four years or so for Sears Holdings (SHLD) and its shareholders would make for quite an interesting Harvard Business School case study. I have been writing about the company since 2005 and was an early investor in Kmart, even before Eddie Lampert used it as a vehicle to buy Sears.

The early success was very impressive. Lampert bought loads of Kmart debt as it filed bankruptcy and gained control of the company's equity when it reemerged in 2004. In 2006 Sears Holdings earned a profit of $1.5...

  • Walmart Has a Black Friday

    (Mon, 01 Dec 2008 15:06:45 -0500)

FP Trading DeskFP Trading Desk submits:

Black Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, is supposed to mark the beginning of the traditional holiday shopping season. It is also a period when retailers are supposed to be in the black – turning a profit. However, while retailers appear to have had a better-than-feared performance during the extended holiday weekend, it doesn’t look like sentiment has improved much. This is likely the result of aggressive price discounting – something that isn’t very encouraging...

That's borne out in the November sales numbers from retailers, who have a lot to worry about in December as well, says Beemer. "Over half the people we talked to, who bought one of those advertised loss leaders on [Black Friday] morning, said that may very well be the only gift they give their entire family for the Christmas season," he says.
