    (Wednesday, August 27, 2008 12:06 PM)

Wal-Mart (WMT) king of big-box retailing will test small format neighborhood food stores in Phoenix Arizona and may soon take the idea national. The smaller stores called Marketside will offer fresh as well as prepared food. At only 15 000 square feet each the stores will look very different from Wal-Mart’s superstores and its Sam’s Club warehouse stores. Marketside’s design includes wood around the store entrance and deep purple awnings the same color as the aprons worn by staff. The Marketside name appears in lowercase green letters and bear no reference to the???

    (Tuesday, August 26, 2008 1:48 PM)

The slumping housing market continues to take a bite out of home improvement - and there’s no immediate relief in sight. Consumers are pressed by high gasoline and food prices leaving less cash to upgrade the kitchen or bathroom. Home Depot (HD) and Lowe’s (LOW) have already taken a hit. Home Depot the sector leader said second-quarter 2008 sales fell to $21 billion a 5.4% decline from the same quarter a year ago. Comparable store sales declined 7.9% but were offset in part by sales from new stores. Home Depot’s net earnings fell to $1.2 billion or $0.71 per ...

FP Trading DeskFP Trading Desk submits:

Higher home heating prices could be another deterrent to U.S. consumers shopping this holiday season. “As if retailers did not have enough to worry about, just as the holiday season rolls around, most consumers will find a new sticker shock in their heating bills,” Gary Balter, research analyst at Credit Suisse.

  • Wal-Mart: Can Marketing Influence Share Price?

    (Wed, 27 Aug 2008 15:00:05 -0400)

    George Gutowski submits:

Wal-Mart (WMT) has experienced approximately a 34% increase in share appreciation in the past year. At one point it was a very good whipping boy- problems in Germany, South Korea and Japan; sluggish sales in North America. I am positive I had a few skeptical comments of my own.

Fortune Magazine had an interesting Marketing article by Suzanne Kapner in the Aug 18 edition. Writing from a marketing perspective, the premise is that Wal-Mart has had marketing challenges and originally saw itself as a logistics company who could deliver low prices...

Eleven of the top 30 are based in the United States.  The Energy sector has the largest representation at 8, followed by Technology at 5.  Only 3 companies in the top 30 are up in 2008 -- Wal-Mart (WMT), IBM (IBM) and Johnson & Johnson...

  • Dow Price Targets from Last November

  • Hedge Fund Tracking: Blue Ridge Capital (John Griffin)

    (Tue, 19 Aug 2008 13:15:31 -0400)

    Market Folly submits:

Four times a year, hedge funds & asset managers with > $100 million AUM (assets under management) are required to report to the SEC their holdings from the previous quarter. I check these 13F filings quarterly just to get a sense as to where these funds are putting their money sector wise. If you just sit down and do some simple number crunching between last quarter's 13F and this quarter's 13F, you can see exactly where these funds have been moving their money.

Please note, these 13F's should be treated as a lagging indicator simply because...
