  • Gartner's Report: Implications of the Recession on the Cell Phone Industry

    (Tue, 02 Dec 2008 05:33:46 -0500)

    Ron Shuttleworth submits:

Last week, Gartner released some market data on worldwide cell phone sales. For anyone with a reasonable understanding of the mobile handset market, these data should not be viewed as surprising:

    • 3rd quarter mobile handset sales growth was about 40% less than the year earlier.
    • Gartner forecasts a 1% to 4% decline in handset sales in 2009.
    • As reported by various sources, most of the growth worldwide has been driven by first-time buyers in emerging economies such as China, India, and throughout the Middle East.

Gartner predicts weakness in the replacement market - especially in advanced economies.

    (Tue, 02 Dec 2008 03:50:55 -0500)

    eChristian Investing submits:

The stock market fell once again in November, despite the strong rally late in the month. The Dow lost 496 points or 5.3% and the Nasdaq lost 185 points for an incredible 10.8% drop. This was the Nasdaq’s third consecutive month of double-digit percentage losses. The S&P 500 index fell 73 points or 7.5%.

The extreme volatility in the markets led to 16 out of the 19 trading days producing triple-digit moves in the Dow index. The Dow fell over 400 points on five different days, but managed to gain over 300 points on four other days. Fortunately,...

  • Dividends: There's No Such Thing as a Free Lunch on Wall Street

    (Thu, 27 Nov 2008 07:51:14 -0500)

    Michael Cintolo submits:

I've written in the past that dividend investments can be a solid piece of your portfolio. I prefer growth stocks, and in that realm, dividends are basically meaningless. However, with more and more stocks, trusts, exchange-traded funds and the like, there are definitely intelligent ways to invest for yield.

Today, however, many investors are looking for certainty in an insanely volatile, uncertain world. And because of that, many people are examining certain financial stocks or trusts that have an indicated dividend yield north of 10% ... sometimes 20% or more! Thus, all you have...

  • Mobile Will Trump Fixed Broadband Internet

    (Mon, 24 Nov 2008 09:17:19 -0500)

    Tom Evslin submits:

"80% of Web users will choose mobile broadband over fixed by 2013" is the headline of a Total Telecom interview with John Cunliffe of Ericsson (ERIC). I agree with the conclusion although I think Ericsson will be unpleasantly surprised to find that LTE is NOT the technology which leads to this revolution.

Mobile access at speeds at least equal to what cable offers and at a price lower than today's cable broadband will be available both in the home and on the road within a year or two at the most. From the Total Telecom...

  • White Space: A Big White Lie?

    (Mon, 24 Nov 2008 06:23:47 -0500)

    Shelly Palmer submits:

Two weeks ago, I wrote an article entitled "White Space – A Connected Future" that explored the kind of world we might live in if White Space devices found their way to market. What’s "white space?" On February 17, 2009 American television stations will stop broadcasting in the analog spectrum and broadcast only in digital. In layman’s terms, each station has been assigned certain "channels" for their broadcasts. The unused space between the channels is known as "white space."

Within minutes of its publication, my article incited impassioned engineers, technogeeks and...

  • Audio: Stovall: December will lay groundwork for 2009 rally

    (Tue, 25 Nov 2008 15:51:55 -0500)

Sam Stovall, the chief investment strategist at Standard & Poor's Equity Research, has a long December wish list that boils down to one point: He needs to see the economic "decline is losing speed rather than gaining speed." Stovall thinks moves by the incoming president, a Fed rate cut and signs that housing falloff is abating would help there. None of these would help stocks much in December, but would lay the groundwork for 20% gains in 2009, says Stovall.
