  • Defense Sector: Locked, Loaded and Ready to Go

    (Mon, 01 Dec 2008 05:49:00 -0500)

    Jim Regan submits:

Take what you’ve heard about the effects of a Barack Obama U.S. Presidency… and throw it away. The defense contractors are in the best spot that I have seen them in years, yet still-cautious investors are making all the wrong moves. The recent turmoil in the sector has led to some unbelievable valuations in the face of a global arms race, a continued surge in national security spending and regional conflicts that should continue to form opportunities for all of the major defense names.

Looking at a Year-to-Date comparison between the S&P 500 Index (SPY) and the...

  • Strategically Managing Your Dividend Portfolio During a Downturn

    (Tue, 25 Nov 2008 08:43:59 -0500)

    Dividends4Life submits:

The recent turbulence in the market has provided many income investors first hand experience in managing their income portfolio in a declining market. For some, this may be their first significant and prolonged downturn. Here are some things that will help you succeed and thrive during this bear market:

    I. Remember Why You Are An Income Investor

The goals of an income portfolio are different than those of a capital appreciation based portfolio. The good news is an income portfolio consisting of

    The Dow's Lost Decade

    (Sun, 23 Nov 2008 11:04:11 -0500)

    Fred Wilson submits:

One of the best posts I read this week was from Fortune's Andy Serwer. In it, he noted:

At the end of 1999 the Dow was around 11,400. Today the Dow is at 8,400, which means the index has fallen some 26%, a decline of almost 3% per year. With just one year left in this decade - even if 2009 is a humdinger - it is increasingly likely that first 10 years of this century will be one big washout for investors. A lost decade.

  • My Dividend Portfolio: I Like Beer

    (Sun, 23 Nov 2008 09:31:43 -0500)

    Devin Hobbes submits:

As I might not have time later this month, and because Anheuser-Busch (BUD) was bought by InBev (INBVF.PK) for $70 a share, I decided to update the Buy and Hold Forever Dividend Portfolio. This and all future updates will be posted here. The spreadsheet tracking the portfolio is available on the original post and here.

I didn't think BUD would be bought at all. And if it were bought, I didn't think it would happen so soon. I said in the original portfolio rules that if a holding was bought...

  • Investing in Stocks: Emotional vs. Financial Costs

    (Fri, 21 Nov 2008 03:24:48 -0500)

    Value Expectations submits:

    Co-written by Rafael Resendes

Over the past couple of months, worsening macro economic conditions, declining corporate profitability and a bottomless stock market have investors longing for the good old days when increases in GDP, declining unemployment, and higher corporate profits and sales resulted in a rising market. When times are good, the emotional cost to putting money into the stock market is very low. Who does not remember how easy and fun it was to make money in the late 1990s, when the market only seemed to go up? Conversely, today?s emotional cost...

  • Dow Member Changes Since the 10/02 Low

    (Thu, 20 Nov 2008 10:34:00 -0500)

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is still about 15% above the bear market closing low on October 9th, 2002, but half of the index's current members are now down since then.  Below we highlight each Dow member's percentage change since 10/9/02.  As shown, McDonald's (MCD) is up the most at 241%, followed by Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Exxon Mobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX), and Caterpillar (CAT).  Surprisingly, financial giant JP Morgan (JPM) is also one of the best performers with a gain of 108%.

General Motors (GM) is, not surprisingly, down the most since...

  • Measuring Risk of a Dividends Investment Profile

    (Wed, 19 Nov 2008 02:38:07 -0500)

    Dividends4Life submits:

As part of defining your investing process, don't forget to spend some time understanding risk. Seasoned investors will tell you that you should know your risk profile before starting to invest. There are several tools available on the web to help you gauge your risk profile. Here are a few:

Once you know your investment risk profile, how do you gauge the risk of individual securities in your portfolio or your portfolio as a whole?...

  • United Technologies: A Good Company Bullied by a Bad Market

    (Sun, 16 Nov 2008 13:28:25 -0500)

    Ockham Research submits:

United Technologies (UTX) is one of those companies that can be easy to forget. They are not garnering headlines like major Financials or Tech companies, or like our automakers last week. However, all this Dow Industrials component does is continue plugging away and beating estimates in its last 4 quarters. In one of the most volatile stock markets in recent history, a little “business as usual” consistency is a highly sought after commodity. United Technologies has been growing sales and aggressively cutting costs, but the general economic and market weakness has caused...

  • Dow Price Targets

    (Tue, 04 Nov 2008 17:17:32 -0500)

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

Below we highlight consensus analyst price targets for the 30 stocks that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average. As shown, Alcoa's (AA) price target is currently the highest above its actual price at 52%. AA is trailed by [[HPQ]] and [[INTC]] with price targets 40% above current levels.

General Motors (GM) is the only stock in the index with a price target that is lower than its actual price. With the record of analysts these days, price targets should be taken with a grain of salt, but we thought...

  • A Buy & Hold Forever Dividend Stock Portfolio

    (Mon, 03 Nov 2008 08:10:49 -0500)

    Devin Hobbes submits:

This year's market turbulence has many investors calling the buy and hold strategy dead. Let's prove them wrong. My musings (here and here) on holding dividend paying stocks forever have inspired me to make a new, all dividend paying stock model portfolio.

It's composed of 43 stocks and one ETF, and is based on minimal research (more research is always better, but the goal here is to show how it doesn't take an investing maven to succeed with a relatively diversified dividend stock portfolio). Almost all the stocks were selected because they're household names that pay...

  • Big company boards' get 11% raises in '08 to $2 mln: report

    (Wed, 19 Nov 2008 13:39:46 -0500)

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Board directors for companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 index gave themselves, on average, an 11% raise in 2008 for a total compensation of $2 million per company, according to preliminary data from the Corporate Library on Wednesday. Median total compensation for each director is now just under $200,000 a year, the independent research firm said. "Directors in the S&P 500 have a clear differential, earning almost twice the overall figure for total compensation at the median," the Corporate Library said. "They also earn higher median option awards and stock awards."

  • Audio: Moroney: Energy stocks, despite setbacks, look good, but don't fall for value trap in financials

    (Mon, 10 Nov 2008 12:23:00 -0500)

Rich Moroney, editor of Dow Theory Forecasts and Upside, says that investors should still be high on energy stocks, despite several months of poor performance, and should not be fooled into thinking that financials are a buy just because prices have dropped. "There is shifting going on," Moroney said, noting that health care appears to be a sector on the rise, but "one of the standouts on the upside is still energy and one of the standouts on the downside is financials."

    (Wed, 22 Oct 2008 15:49:00 -0500)

When Boeing Co. machinists walked off the job early last month, the impact of halted production lines was felt far beyond the aircraft manufacturer’s silenced facilities.

  • Morgan Stanley cuts United Technologies, Textron

    (Tue, 21 Oct 2008 08:54:48 -0500)

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Morgan Stanley lowered United Technologies to equal-weight from overweight and Textron to underweight from equal-weight. On United Technologies, analyst Heidi Wood said valuation multiples look reasonable amid a likely rise in the U.S. dollar, higher pension expense and harder cuts at Pratt. On Textron, Wood said the stock may not be cheap enough and the company may miss fourth-quarter earnings even after the firm cut estimates by 25%.
