  • ETF Update: Healthcare, Africa's Impact on Water ETFs, Energy ETFs

    (Tue, 22 Jul 2008 06:06:26 -0400)

tom lydonTom Lydon (ETF Trends) submits:

Health Care ETFs Could Use A Check-Up

As the presidential elections are only months away, a big issue on the minds of U.S. citizens is the state of the health care industry, the quality of the care we receive, and how any decisions made will affect ETFs.

The United States spends heavily on health care, especially in contrast to other industrialized countries, but is it actually worth the expense?

    Frank Holmes submits:

The investment opportunity in infrastructure seems to be getting bigger and better all the time, especially in emerging markets.

Merrill Lynch came out with a new research report that raises the expected spending on emerging-markets infrastructure to $2.25 trillion over the next three years, nearly double its earlier estimate.

  • Closed-End Funds: The Preferred Way to Play the Financials

    (Mon, 02 Jun 2008 04:28:58 -0400)

    Investing the Middle Way submits:

I've been meaning to add some financials to my portfolio ever since the subprime crisis began. I traded Goldman Sachs (GS)  for some short-term profit recently, but in general found the headlines a little too hard to handle. Okay, so that was a bit tongue in cheek. I actually have a couple names in this sector on my short shopping list again. But the point I'm trying to make is that there is a less risky way to play the financials -  through their preferred shares, or you can do...

  • Sector Rotation: Moving Away From Geographically Based Asset Allocations

    (Tue, 03 Apr 2007 13:32:52 -0400)

Richard Kang submits: Let me start by saying that I received three calls yesterday from the press. On the one hand, I?m happy that my articles are getting some attention and with further coverage in the mainstream press, I am very eager to see how my readership grows (fingers crossed). However, everybody wants to talk about the greater focus on ?active management? in the ETF industry. Is it that surprising?! This is neither bad or good. The industry is simply evolving based on its inner economic conditions, changes in the overall...

  • New Infrastructure ETF From SSGA: A Closer Look

    (Sat, 27 Jan 2007 13:21:19 -0500)

Richard Kang submits: Bloomberg News has the scoop on an ETF for a new asset class. Well, 'new' except for the hundreds, if not thousands, of large institutional investors who have already implemented exposure to the infrastructure sector.

    Details of the fund
The article states that the fund will track the Macquarie Global Infrastructure 100 Index. It also specifically mentions the following sub-sectors:

    ? Telecommunications companies
    ? Electricity companies
    ? Water companies
    ? Gas-distribution companies

  • Van Eck Global's New ETFs: Steel and Environmental Services

    (Mon, 16 Oct 2006 22:54:34 -0400)

Richard Kang submits: I received the latest press release form Van Eck Global. Earlier this year, they entered into the ETF market with their first offering ? a gold producer ETF (ticker: GDX). As of September 30, 2006 it has over $250 million in assets and averages over 500,000 shares traded per day. It?s even option eligible. We maintain gold exposure through XGD, an iShare ETF domiciled in Canada giving exposure to stocks in the TSX Gold Subindex. Basically, this would be Canada?s counterpart to GDX....

  • Two Concerns With the New ETFs Hitting the Market

    (Tue, 20 Jun 2006 03:04:53 -0400)

Richard Kang submits: There's been alot of recent news about new offerings being introduced by WisdomTree and Powershares and some not so recently by the bigger shops. I have two comments:

    1. Market cap weighted indices.
Rob Arnott is often credited with the introduction of an alternative to market cap weighted indices ? specifically, the idea of an equal weighted cap index. The data looked conclusive and made a lot of common sense. In many ways, the basic idea overlapped well with the...

  • Herb Greenberg's RealityCheck: Why Gabelli Utility Trust is risky, and a Watch List

    (Thu, 26 Aug 2004 09:31:00 -0500)

SAN DIEGO (CBS.MW) -- Mario Gabelli doesn't come out and say so himself, but I get the impression even he wouldn't buy the Gabelli Utility Trust. The closed-end fund, which invests in utility stocks, trades at a 43 percent premium to its net asset value, giving it the fattest premium of all closed-end funds.

  • The Guru's Corner: Closed-end bond funds out; battered IPOs in

    (Mon, 16 Aug 2004 11:58:52 -0500)

MIAMI (Herzfeld) -- Last spring we successfully bucked the trend with a play in closed-end bond funds. We now spy a new target in closed-end IPOs that have taken a beating in the aftermarket.

  • The Tax Man: New business expenses and 'What's my bracket?'

    (Thu, 26 Oct 2000 14:22:49 -0500)

Dear Tax Man: I've created a computer-consulting business, strictly a one-man show, done on off-hours. To do this, I bought a computer and would like to deduct the cost, whether in one year or over time. How do I do this? I've gotten advice to keep the money for consulting separate from my personal money. Does that mean I need to have the consulting part of "me" pay from its own account for the computer I've already bought 2 weeks ago? Or will my purchasing it be considered an investment into the consulting firm? I do have a separate checking...
