Dividend investing in the classic implementation focuses on identifying solid companies with a record of growing their dividends each year; and an expectation that it will continue into the future. The focus is not solely on yield but a combination of yield and dividend growth. Often it is the lower yield, higher growth, security that will provide the best return over time. Here are several stocks living up to shareholders' expectations by raising their cash dividends:
NIKE (NKE) Boosts Dividend by 8.7% to $0.25/share (2.07%)
Donaldson (DCI) Boosts Quarterly Dividend 5% to $0.115/share (1.53%)
Despite what has been a market of seemingly universal carnage, many stocks are actually up this year. With the across-the-board selling over the past six weeks or so, some of these stocks have been hammered yet remain up. I thought it might be useful to take a look at those stocks hit hard recently to see if their weakness is a function of a fundamental change or rather the result of indiscriminant selling perhaps.
The polls are in. The WNA Nuclear Energy Index is a clear winner over the S&P 500. Well, let's quantify that; the S&P 500's 5-year annualized return is 11%, the "back-tested" WNA Nuclear Energy Index returned 33% annualized over the past 5-years. It's fair to say the nuclear index holds a decisive edge. Of course, past performance notwithstanding, the nuclear industry appears poised for stronger momentum in the years to come as nuclear build-out starts to gain traction. Using the last nuclear build-out cycle as an example, a safe assumption would indicate an expansion cycle that may last...
Alan Brochstein, CFA submits:
For a long time, I considered dividends about as relevant as stock splits: Yes, they both could serve as signals of management?s confidence in the outlook, but neither event changed the underlying value of the company. Of course, in a post-Enron world, where taxation laws were easily changed to encourage the payment of dividends, we have seen a change in the landscape, with many more companies paying them and more investors caring. I am not so sure...

BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- Josh Peters, editor of the Morningstar DividendInvestor newsletter, says investors in dividend-paying stocks that are taking a beating on the market need to see whether the dividend payouts are showing signs of strength and rebound -- making a stock a bargain -- or whether they are warning investors that the shares are due for a collapse.

In a radio interview, Peters focused on several financial stocks, noting that the "market is selling everything indiscriminately, and is selling good and bad companies alike," creating some opportunities for investors who manage to avoid the landmines.
