    NEW YORK (AP) - Title insurer LandAmerica Financial Group Inc. said Wednesday it will file for bankruptcy protection, while competitor Fidelity National Financial Inc. said it will acquire three of LandAmerica's subsidiaries.

    (Reuters) - Title insurer LandAmerica Financial Group Inc said it has filed for bankruptcy protection and its bigger rival Fidelity National Financial Inc will buy two of its underwriting units.

    TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) -- LandAmerica Financial Group Inc., the Richmond, Va., title insurer, said on Wednesday that it and a subsidiary filed to reorganize under Chapter 11 of U.S. bankruptcy law. LandAmerica said it filed the petitions in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Richmond. The unit that filed is LandAmerica 1031 Exchange Services Inc.; no other LandAmerica businesses have filed under Chapter 11, LFG said. LandAmerica also agreed to sell its two main title-underwriting subsidiaries, Lawyers Title Insurance Corp. and Commonwealth Land Title Insurance Co., as well as United Capital Title

    NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Shares of real-estate financier LandAmerica Financial Group Inc. lost about 85% of their value, trading down $3.73 at 61 cents in early Monday action, after their merger agreement with Fidelity National Financial Inc. was terminated Friday. Commenting earlier on the collapse of the deal, LandAmerica Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Theodore Chandler said: "We are disappointed with Fidelity's decision. However, our attention remains focused on strengthening LandAmerica's business and exploring strategic alternatives during these incredibly difficult economic times." Shares of Fidelity rose over 4% in early Monday trade to $7.72.
