In past years, I have successfully used a screen that identifies companies that can take themselves private by levering up their balance sheet and using their cash flow to pay the interest payments. The screen assumes companies could get financing at 9% and could cover the tax adjusted interest payments if they stopped expanding and just spent a minimum in capital expenditures to continue operating.
If you assume that we don't enter a depression and the companies could actually get financing right now, a stunning number of high quality companies - companies with high cash flow and relatively low debt - could take themselves private...
Let me quickly admit that everything that follows could be wrong - one possibly shouldn't own ANY stocks or any assets. With that said, typically there are some stocks that go up even during the worst of bear markets.
The goal of this article is to consider how one should go about finding the best stocks to own when almost every stock is cheap by most metrics and certainly down a lot in price. It seems to me that the sellers,...
A simple options-trading strategy combined with time-tested cash flow analysis could be the winning formula for generating profits now in individual stocks – all without the worry of perfectly timing a market bottom.

Traders see the market volatility index ((VIX)) near all-time highs, huge intraday moves in individual stocks, and enormous uncertainty about the length and depth of a global recession. They worry about slowing earnings growth, contracting...

If you were thinking it might be time to bottom-fish among the semiconductor equipment stocks, you might want to restrain that impulse.
SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International, a global industry association) reported yesterday that worldwide semiconductor manufacturing equipment billings were $7.83 billion in the second quarter of 2008. That is 26 percent less than the first quarter of 2008 and 29 percent less than the same quarter a year ago.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 is currently set to have its third straight -1% decline. Below we highlight the 25 (out of 100) worst performing stocks in the index since last Thursday's close.

Martin B Anstice, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Lam Research (LRCX charts), just purchased half a million dollars of his company stock. Nobody should know the financial condition of a company better than its CFO. When a CFO buys a significant number of shares, people should pay attention.
SEC extends naked shorting ban, maybe more to come. The SEC extended the temporary restrictions on naked short selling of 19 financial stocks to Aug. 12. It did not broaden the stock universe covered by the ban, and it said it won't be extended beyond Aug. 12. SEC chief Christopher Cox said that after the current rule expires, the agency will consider rule changes that would focus on the broader market. It is said to be studying numerous ideas. Shares of the 19 firms enjoyed an initial bounce, but...
