    NYSE specialist firm LaBranche said Monday it has hired bankers and will evaluate strategic alternatives -- which usually but not always includes selling itself.     A lawsuit filed Friday by Sea Carriers LLC seeks $4 billion in damages from the New York Stock Exchange's parent NYSE Euronext, as well as Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Bear Stearns, LaBranche & Co. and Van Der Moolen -- which own "specialist" floor-trading businesses.   • Forest Labs urges holders to reject Toronto firm's mini-bid

    TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) -- Forest Laboratories Inc., the New York drugmaker, urged holders not to tender their shares to an unsolicited mini-tender offer by TRC Capital of Toronto. In a statement late on Wednesday, Forest said TRC is tendering for 3 million, or less than 1%, of its shares at $20.35 each. The offer price, Forest said, is 4% below the company's $21.20 closing price on Dec. 1, which is the day before the offering document is dated. The offer price is 16% below Forest Labs' closing price of $23.66 on Wednesday.

    BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- Charles River shares plunged 23% to $26.11 in midday trading Thursday on a weakened 2008 financial outlook. Late Wednesday, the research services provider said it now sees 2008 sales growing by only 9% to 10%, down from its previous outlook of 12% to 14%. Earnings per share are now seen at $2.48 to $2.52, down from $2.59 to $2.65. Adjusted earnings per share are expected to come in between $2.83 and $2.87, compared with its previous forecast of $2.94 to $3.00.     BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- Drug stocks diverged in trade early Thursday while shares of Charles River Laboratories plunged after issuing a lowered 2008 financial forecast. The Amex Pharmaceutical Index advanced 0.9% to 264.71 and the Amex Biotechnology Index declined 0.7% to 656.84. Charles River shares dove over 20% to $27.00. The research services provider said late Wednesday it now sees 2008 sales growing by only 9% to 10%, down from its previous outlook of 12% to 14%.     TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) -- Core Laboratories NV, the Amsterdam provider of technology to efficiently describe and develop petroleum reservoirs, reported that third-quarter net income rose 20% on 19% higher revenue. Earnings reached $39.5 million, or $1.64 a share, from $31.5 million, or $1.29, in the year-earlier period. Excluding special items including currency-related losses and a lower effective tax rate, the latest earnings from operations were $1.60 a share. Revenue rose to $202.5 million from $170.1 million. A survey of analysts by FactSet Research produced consensus estimates of $1.61 a share of profit on $204.6 million of revenue. Operating-profit margin...

    NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Forest Laboratories Inc. said Tuesday that its third-quarter earnings rose to $244 million, or 80 cents a share, compared to $225 million, or 71 cents a share, in the same period a year ago. Revenue rose to $926 million compared to $842 million. Analysts polled by FactSet Research estimated, on average, earnings per share of 70 cents and sales of $975 million. Forest says its fiscal 2009 earnings per share will be in the range of $3.30 to $3.40.
