  • NBC's Greatest Sin: Not Leveraging the Olympics to Win Elections

    (Thu, 28 Aug 2008 04:45:27 -0400)

    ashkanAshkan Karbasfrooshan submits:

I’m still not convinced that NBC (GE) can or should be blamed for not maximizing the Web opportunity with its Olympics coverage.  The simple fact is TV loses when Web grows. I’m not saying Web viewership cannibalizes TV audiences, I’m just saying the sooner the Web becomes less of a clown industry, the worse that is for TV.   Don’t be a buffoon in denying that; once readers and marketers realized audiences get their news online, print only died faster.

Anyway, where I do fault NBC...

  • Time To Take Video Games Seriously?

    (Wed, 27 Aug 2008 16:58:43 -0400)

    larry dignanLarry Dignan (ZDNet) submits:

Will video games be coming to an enterprise near you? Forrester Research seems to think so as companies cook up new ways to train employees–especially those so-called millennial.

I can hear the laughter now. Video games? We’re about serious business, you’ll say. What’s the ROI you’ll ask? Video games aren’t serious–they are a productivity killer. I can’t even get my CFO to upgrade Windows 98 desktops!

  • Russia's Rising Internet Population

    (Wed, 27 Aug 2008 14:00:14 -0400)

    Erick Schonfeld submits:

For Web companies looking to expand abroad, Russia needs to be at the top of their list of markets to enter. Russia has the fastest growing Internet population in Europe, followed by France and Spain. In a comparison of 16 European Internet populations by country, comScore reports that Russia’s Internet audience for the month of June grew 27 percent year over year, compared to 21 percent growth in France and 15 percent growth in Spain. (Is Russia part of Europe? It is for the purposes of this analysis). If...

  • Microsoft Windows-Based Server Revenue Flat Year over Year

    (Wed, 27 Aug 2008 09:32:07 -0400)

    Dennis Byron submits:

The most recent IDC worldwide quarterly server data says 2008 Microsoft (MSFT) Windows-based server revenue was flat vs. the second calendar quarter of 2007.  This follows and is no doubt related to the burst in the same category in quarter 1 2008.

The chart  shows revenue in billions for each quarter for Windows-based servers as well as Linux-, Unix- and other-operating-system-based server shipments from the factory over the last 24 months.

comScore, Inc., a company which provides marketing data and services to many of the Internet’s largest businesses, released Tuesday its June ‘08 ranking of the top online display ad publishers and advertisers, based on data from the comScore Ad Metrix service.

Fox Interactive Media, which owns MySpace.com - a division of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. (NWS), ranked as the top display ad publishing property in June, serving 52.3 billion ad views, grabbing almost 16% market share. MySpace.com accounted for 51 billion of these views. • Largest Companies in the World

    (Tue, 26 Aug 2008 16:24:38 -0400)

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

Below we highlight the 30 largest companies in the World by market cap ($).  As shown, Exxon Mobil (XOM) is the top dog by about $70 billion.  Exxon is trailed by another energy company, Petrochina (PTR), then General Electric (GE) and Microsoft (MSFT).

Eleven of the top 30 are based in the United States.  The Energy sector has the largest representation at 8, followed by Technology at 5.  Only 3 companies in the top 30 are up in 2008 -- Wal-Mart (WMT), IBM (IBM) and Johnson & Johnson...

  • NBCOlympics.com: Winner, Loser, or Hobbled from the Start?

    (Tue, 26 Aug 2008 03:17:06 -0400)

    Kevin Maney submits:

There seem to be two versions of stories out there about NBC's (GE) online Olympics coverage. One set touts the huge-sounding numbers: NBCOlympics.com made 2,200 hours of video available and served up 1.2 billion page and 72 million video streams. All of which is quite impressive. But the other set of stories is far more skeptical, pointing out that NBC sold only $5.8 million in ads on the site, vs. CBS (CBS) hauling in $23 million in ads when it showed the NCAA basketball tournament on-line in March.

    The way I see it,...

  • Digital Age Savvy: Brand for the Buck

    (Tue, 26 Aug 2008 03:03:09 -0400)

    Diane Mermigas submits:

Forget the Olympic ratings; we knew they would be through the roof. One of the goals of NBC Universal's (GE) Olympics was reestablishing its brand in a global media world in which fickle consumers pass click-quick judgment on content and multimillion-dollar marketing campaigns based on impulse and their cyber friends.

Branding just isn't what it used to be.
