  • Time To Take Video Games Seriously?

    (Wed, 27 Aug 2008 16:58:43 -0400)

    larry dignanLarry Dignan (ZDNet) submits:

Will video games be coming to an enterprise near you? Forrester Research seems to think so as companies cook up new ways to train employees–especially those so-called millennial.

I can hear the laughter now. Video games? We’re about serious business, you’ll say. What’s the ROI you’ll ask? Video games aren’t serious–they are a productivity killer. I can’t even get my CFO to upgrade Windows 98 desktops!

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

Below we highlight the 30 largest companies in the World by market cap ($).  As shown, Exxon Mobil (XOM) is the top dog by about $70 billion.  Exxon is trailed by another energy company, Petrochina (PTR), then General Electric (GE) and Microsoft (MSFT).

Eleven of the top 30 are based in the United States.  The Energy sector has the largest representation at 8, followed by Technology at 5.  Only 3 companies in the top 30 are up in 2008 -- Wal-Mart (WMT), IBM (IBM) and Johnson & Johnson...

  • Dow Price Targets from Last November

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

Barry Ritholtz over at the Big Picture recently highlightedBloomberg'sChart of the Day showing that analyst profit forecasts are currently worse than ever.

With that in mind, we pulled up a post we did back in November highlighting the average analyst price targets for the 30 Dow stocks.  After analyzing those price targets and where the stocks are now, it's clear that bear markets are definitely not an analyst's best friend.

Are the top value hedge funds going to beat the market every quarter, or just outperform when the market is going up?

  • Omrix & SanDisk: Takeover Talk Drives Volatile Trading

    (Wed, 20 Aug 2008 08:42:00 -0400)

    shlomi cohenShlomi Cohen submits:

If the 11% gain by Nasdaq in mid-July isn't a summer rally, I don't know what is. They talk about it nearly every year, and it never happens, yet this year it arrived when it was expected least, as the market continues to labor under the shadow of the crisis in the banks sector.

The rally was exceptionally pronounced on Nasdaq because of the influx of funds to tech stocks, but the climb by the Russell 2000 was higher still - 14% from mid-July as investors piled into small...

  • 5 Impressive Stocks in This Difficult Market

    (Tue, 19 Aug 2008 07:19:20 -0400)

    Dividends4Life submits:

Now that more than half the year is behind us, I thought it would be interesting to look at my top 5 performers through July 31, 2008. As dismal as the stock market has been this year, there are still some bright spots. My top five performers have all achieved double-digit positive total returns since I owned them and positive returns in 2008. Here they are with comments:

    #5 - McDonald's (MCD) + 4.4% Total 2008 Return
Last November, I bought this burger maker for $57 in spite of only paying one dividend per year....

  • Johnson & Johnson: The Type of Growth Stock I Favor

    (Tue, 19 Aug 2008 05:38:37 -0400)

    David M. Gordon submits:

Even my clients have grown despondent in their concerns and fears that the market's triumphal march higher has ended, and with its ending chimes the death knell of the investment opportunities I favor (and guide their portfolios toward). Certainly, the ~9 month decline calculates as among the more unbearable, but "the market you are in always feels like the worst."

I attempt to keep my readers (and clients' portfolios) on the right side of the market; for example, warning and assuming a defensive posture last...
