  • Dow Member Changes Since the 10/02 Low

    (Thu, 20 Nov 2008 10:34:00 -0500)

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is still about 15% above the bear market closing low on October 9th, 2002, but half of the index's current members are now down since then.  Below we highlight each Dow member's percentage change since 10/9/02.  As shown, McDonald's (MCD) is up the most at 241%, followed by Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Exxon Mobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX), and Caterpillar (CAT).  Surprisingly, financial giant JP Morgan (JPM) is also one of the best performers with a gain of 108%.

General Motors (GM) is, not surprisingly, down the most since...

  • IBM Acquisition Further Limits IT User Virtualization Choices

    (Thu, 20 Nov 2008 10:11:03 -0500)

    Dennis Byron submits:

Back in June, I introduced you to Transitive via this interview with Transitive’s Vice President of Marketing Ian Robinson. The excitement for me was the cross-virtualization platform provider’s expanding distribution channel, in light of a trend to decreasing virtualization-software distribution options via Citrix’s (CTRX) acquisition of Xen, the oddball EMC (EMC)/VMware (VMW) arrangement, and Microsoft (MSFT) coming to market with its hypervisor embedded in Windows, partially based on acquiring Softricity.

But it turns out to have been a “Prague spring” for information technology ((IT)) users because IBM (IBM) is acquiring the virtualization startup with...

  • Enterprise Software Vendors Now Vulnerable to Maintenance Payment Reduction

    (Tue, 18 Nov 2008 07:39:46 -0500)

    MGI Research submits:

The current downturn has given rise to numerous pieces of fundamentally good analysis on software company valuations that use software maintenance payments as a basis for valuing a business. Comments like “this company sells at only 2X or 3X its maintenance revenue stream” have popped up in numerous conversations with tech investors and sell side analysts. In fact, in better times, comments like these would send most investors to the trading desk. Software maintenance are the fees that software users pay to enterprise software providers to keep their products current, get enhancements, bug fixes and obtain...

  • Bond Expert: Monday Wrap

    (Mon, 17 Nov 2008 15:58:58 -0500)

    John Jansen submits:

Prices of Treasury coupon securities posted modest gains today as economic releases paint a grim picture of a stumbling economy and announcements of chunky layoffs by former financial giant Citibank (C) raise the specter of a deep and harsh recession.

Against that background, the yield on the 2 year note edged lower by one basis point to 1.52 percent. The yield on the 3 year note dropped 2 basis points to 1.52 percent. The yield on the 5 year note fell 3 basis points to 2.30. The yield on the 10 year note has dropped 6 basis...

  • Tech May Be a Wreck, But This Isn't 2001

    (Sun, 16 Nov 2008 13:57:00 -0500)

ab analytical servicesAlan Brochstein, CFA submits:

I have been negative on Tech as a sector relative to the market as a whole, but I am no longer so. I shared my reasons over a year ago (too early), arguing that the strong balance sheets and high exposure to international sales were masking high valuation and significant but under-appreciated exposure to the consumer.  I noted that recessions had never been kind to tech stocks and this one wouldn't likely be different.

    2008 hasn't been kind...

  • Ten Tech Companies With Market Capitalization Above Five Billion

    (Fri, 14 Nov 2008 03:56:22 -0500)

The technology sector has been one of the worst performing in recent weeks. Many big tech companies like Tyco (TYC), and Intel (INTC) are slashing outlooks. I run fundamental stock screeners for big technology stocks included in the S&P 500.

For market capitalization above five bln USD and P/E valuation below ten, the results show ten big tech companies listed below:

  • Reinventing the Auto Industry: Lessons Learned from IBM

    (Thu, 13 Nov 2008 03:33:47 -0500)

    John Slater submits:

Picture the scene. It’s late 1992. The U.S. is still recovering from a severe recession and financial crisis. But there’s trouble on Main Street. One of the nation’s most venerable industries is in shambles. Upstarts from Silicon Valley created a new technology that is rapidly destroying the main frame computer business, one of the great success stories of postwar America. And now low cost competitors from Asia are rapidly destroying the competitiveness of the U. S. chip manufacturers.

As a new administration is preparing to bring historical change to Washington, hordes of...

  • Fast Money Recap - Finding the Good in Goldman (11/11/08)

    (Wed, 12 Nov 2008 08:28:31 -0500)

A Recap of CNBC's Fast Money, Tuesday November 11.

Burlington Northern (BNI), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), IBM (IBM)

Stocks fell on Tuesday, major indexes lost 2% and 29 of 30 Dow stocks were down. Guy Adami would "buy dips and sell rips" and he is happy with the solid trading range. Pete Najarian noted Burlington Northern's move from $80 to $84. Hewlett-Packard and IBM were both down and Najarian thinks these stocks may be buys for investors who think emerging markets will recover soon.

  • General Electric Moves On Down the Largest Company List

    (Wed, 12 Nov 2008 03:12:45 -0500)

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

Below we highlight the 25 largest companies in the US.  As shown, Exxon Mobil (XOM) still holds the top spot, but there have been lots of other changes since the bear market started last October.  General Electric (GE) has probably had the most dramatic move, from second largest to its current rank of fifth.  Prior to XOM taking over GE in size during the energy sector bubble, General Electric held the top spot for quite some time.  Wal-Mart (WMT) has had the most dramatic increase during the...
