  • What Are Some of the Best Hedge Fund Managers Doing?

    (Wed, 19 Nov 2008 06:04:48 -0500)

    Keith Robison submits:

It's 13F filing time again. Institutional money managers who oversee more than $100 million must report their holdings to the SEC each quarter in their 13F report. These reports can be used to analyze the position movements of the best fund managers in the industry. Sometimes they can even be used to figure out the manager’s current strategy, but keep in mind the funds that I am going to review are most likely hedged in some way. Also keep in mind that not every position held is shown in these filings and many of these funds have high turnover; so...

  • Backlog of Decisions Is Building at the FDA

    (Sat, 08 Nov 2008 13:43:03 -0500)

    Mike Havrilla submits:

The accompanying table (click to enlarge) presents 70 FDA product approval decision dates along with the market caps and one year stock price change for the underlying companies. A note of caution for investors and traders is that the most common outcome from the FDA in the past year has been a delay in decisions due to understaffed conditions at the agency. However, several companies have pending decisions which are likely to occur either before year-end or early next year and will have a major impact on their stock prices.

Rebecca Engmann Darst contributed to this report.

General Electric(GE) With a little over three weeks to go before September’s options expiration, an investor seems to be less pessimistic over the prospects for shares in consumer-giant, General Electric, than today’s 2.7% share price decline otherwise shows. While we can’t tell if this is the action of one trader, but a look at the footprint left by time and sales data indicates to us that a premium seller is content to wear the risk of a further decline in shares at the conglomerate beneath $25.80. An investor appears...

  • UBS downgrades Siemens, Alstom on likely fall in orders

    (Fri, 07 Nov 2008 04:50:20 -0500)

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- UBS downgraded Siemens two notches to sell from buy and also cut Alstom to neutral from buy, saying falling commodity prices and the tough lending environment may lead to a sharp fall in orders from power generation customers. On Alstom the broker said it still expects solid results in 2009, but has cut its earnings forecast for 2010 by 20% and for 2011 by 46% due to likely...
