  • Pulte, Gafisa: Hot Theories and Housing Stocks

    (Thu, 04 Sep 2008 19:41:55 -0400)

    Trader Mark submits:

This market will drive a sane person batty at times, I have to tell you. Remember about 2-3 months ago, every day that oil dropped people ran into technology stocks as a "safe haven"? We were shaking our head sadly and saying, how is this a safe haven... in time this will be proven to be a false assertion. But that did not stop the stocks from running up 5-10-15% each time oil dropped a few bucks as hedge funds had to find something to "play".

Remember, as we always say, perception is reality. Until reality strikes. Lately...

  • Hedge Fund Tracking: Tremblant Capital

    (Thu, 14 Aug 2008 16:22:32 -0400)

    Market Folly submits:

Four times a year, hedge funds & asset managers with > $100 million AUM (assets under management) are required to report to the SEC their holdings from the previous quarter. I check these 13F filings quarterly just to get a sense as to where these funds are putting their money sector wise. If you just sit down and do some simple number crunching between last quarter's 13F and this quarter's 13F, you can see exactly where these funds have been moving their money.

Please note, these 13F's should be treated as a lagging indicator simply because...

  • 6 South American Stocks Offering Interesting Opportunities

    (Wed, 06 Aug 2008 05:20:11 -0400)

    tim plaehnTim Plaehn submits:

I thought I would put up a list of some interesting South America stocks for a pair of reasons. First as you can see from the chart above of the ETF for the Latin America 40 (ILF) that the region’s stocks have pulled back significantly over the recent few months. Second, I have a strong interest in the region and keep my eye out for interesting stocks. I hope to point out a few here you have not heard of or considered.

  • 4 Stocks in Trouble

    (Wed, 28 May 2008 08:34:00 -0400)

    Trader Mark submits:

I see the identical pattern in 4 charts, so I am cutting back exposure to all 4. These have the makings of companies that could be beginning to break down. If I am wrong, I'll pay up a slight premium to regain exposure once the technical pattern improves. The names are different but it's the same pattern - 4 companies which are breaking down below their 50 day moving averages. Unless they quickly reverse back over and above, this could portend a more serious move downward.

I see a lot of other companies which could be approaching a similar set up with another...

  • The "Ben is My Friend" Trade

    (Wed, 02 Apr 2008 21:34:08 -0400)

    Trader Mark submits:

With the liquidation of the short exposure, I have over $400K cash so I need to find some things to buy - these are the areas I have begun layering into... I call this the "Ben is my friend" trade. Since I don't trust Ben, I am not buying favorites such as Fannie Mae (FNM) or Lehman Brothers (LEH) but I'll go with some of current holdings....

    2. How Ivory Tower Economists Created the Housing Bubble

      (Fri, 28 Mar 2008 04:10:04 -0400)

      DonPaul Olshove submits:

This is Econ101 folks. Seems the professionals are so wrapped up in super complex, esoteric theories that they have forgotten that particular part of their education. To understand when our house prices will stop falling, one must first know what the price of a house should be. To know what house prices should be, you have to understand what the house prices look like to the people who actually buy or sell houses.

Two kinds of people buy houses. People who consume them as a dwelling and people who invest in them. Most home buyers are both at once....

    3. 3 Latin American Stocks with Great Potential

      (Thu, 27 Mar 2008 05:46:21 -0400)

      tim plaehnTim Plaehn submits:

While scanning through my watchlist and checking recent news, several Latin America based companies caught my attention. Here is some information on each:

      • Banco Latinoamerica de Exportaciones SA (BLX), more commonly known as BLADEX. This Panama based financial institution facilitates trade throughout Latin America. The following quote from Carlos Yap, CFO during the most recent earnings conference call sums up the company?s growth prospects:

I would like to highlight the strong financial performance of the bank not only in 2007, but also during the last three years, which have validated our...
