  • Investing in Water - It's Not Just for Drinking

    (Thu, 28 Aug 2008 05:38:03 -0400)

    Aaron Katsman submits:

You turn on the faucet, and-voila-you have a drink of water! Those of us who come from western nations tend to take water for granted. However, after a few years in Israel, we appreciate the fact that whatever water we receive is a gift. The media is filled with reports about how the world is running low on crude oil, but not too much attention is paid to the growing water crisis.

  • NBC's Greatest Sin: Not Leveraging the Olympics to Win Elections

    (Thu, 28 Aug 2008 04:45:27 -0400)

    ashkanAshkan Karbasfrooshan submits:

I’m still not convinced that NBC (GE) can or should be blamed for not maximizing the Web opportunity with its Olympics coverage.  The simple fact is TV loses when Web grows. I’m not saying Web viewership cannibalizes TV audiences, I’m just saying the sooner the Web becomes less of a clown industry, the worse that is for TV.   Don’t be a buffoon in denying that; once readers and marketers realized audiences get their news online, print only died faster.

Anyway, where I do fault NBC...

  • The Long Case for GE

    (Wed, 27 Aug 2008 07:36:20 -0400)

    David Van Knapp submits:

Summary: General Electric (GE) appears to be a good buy—for both price and dividend growth—at its current price of around $28.

Type of Company and Stock: GE is a conglomerate, and its participation in several very different industries makes it almost impossible to categorize into my usual Type A, B, or D classifications. If I had to pick, I'd call it an A-B company.

The Olympics Gold Goes to NBC

    (Wed, 27 Aug 2008 03:57:55 -0400)

    Julia Boorstin submits:

CNBC's parent company NBC Universal (GE) did quite well with the Olympics.

More than 211 million Americans watched the games -- that's more than 70 percent of the country -- making them the most-watched ever, beating the 209 million viewers who watched the 1996 Atlanta games. (Though it's worth noting there are more TVs out there now.)

  • NBC Beijing '08 Online Metrics: High Viewership, Little Revenue

    (Tue, 26 Aug 2008 16:43:06 -0400)

    J.P. Hannan submits:

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that NBC's (NYSE: GE) decision to limit the amount of footage from the recent Olympic Games it showed on its websites significantly impacted their online revenues for the games.  According to research firm eMarketer, Inc., the network's efforts only brought in approximately $5.75 million in online revenues for the games, a paltry showing for such a major event, if true.

Interestingly, the New York Times also weighed in on NBC's online efforts for the Olympics, proclaiming "the extent to which the Internet served as a supplement to television was...

  • Largest Companies in the World

    (Tue, 26 Aug 2008 16:24:38 -0400)

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

Below we highlight the 30 largest companies in the World by market cap ($).  As shown, Exxon Mobil (XOM) is the top dog by about $70 billion.  Exxon is trailed by another energy company, Petrochina (PTR), then General Electric (GE) and Microsoft (MSFT).

Eleven of the top 30 are based in the United States.  The Energy sector has the largest representation at 8, followed by Technology at 5.  Only 3 companies in the top 30 are up in 2008 -- Wal-Mart (WMT), IBM (IBM) and Johnson & Johnson...

  • Tuesday Options Update: UNG, WYE, XLF, GE, AAPL, MRVL, FNM, MCRS, CLNE, CAKE,

    (Tue, 26 Aug 2008 12:32:54 -0400)

Rebecca Engmann Darst contributed to this report.

US Natural Gas Fund (UNG) – Here’s a trade that stuck out like a sore thumb to us today. We saw 16,000 call options in the April series trade at the 70 strike for a premium of 0.90. The volume represents 5% of current open interest in this fund that tracks the price of natural gas. While the size of the trade stands out (it comprises 39% of today’s option volume), it’s the strike price that’s unusual. The UNG is currently trading at a share price of $38.38 (+4% on the day) and so...

  • NBCOlympics.com: Winner, Loser, or Hobbled from the Start?

    (Tue, 26 Aug 2008 03:17:06 -0400)

    Kevin Maney submits:

There seem to be two versions of stories out there about NBC's (GE) online Olympics coverage. One set touts the huge-sounding numbers: NBCOlympics.com made 2,200 hours of video available and served up 1.2 billion page and 72 million video streams. All of which is quite impressive. But the other set of stories is far more skeptical, pointing out that NBC sold only $5.8 million in ads on the site, vs. CBS (CBS) hauling in $23 million in ads when it showed the NCAA basketball tournament on-line in March.

    The way I see it,...

  • Digital Age Savvy: Brand for the Buck

    (Tue, 26 Aug 2008 03:03:09 -0400)

    Diane Mermigas submits:

Forget the Olympic ratings; we knew they would be through the roof. One of the goals of NBC Universal's (GE) Olympics was reestablishing its brand in a global media world in which fickle consumers pass click-quick judgment on content and multimillion-dollar marketing campaigns based on impulse and their cyber friends.

Branding just isn't what it used to be.

  • Monday Options Update: GE, LEH, C, RIMM, AMD, STI, TLAB, ALO

    (Mon, 25 Aug 2008 12:49:16 -0400)

Rebecca Engmann Darst contributed to this report.

General Electric(GE) With a little over three weeks to go before September’s options expiration, an investor seems to be less pessimistic over the prospects for shares in consumer-giant, General Electric, than today’s 2.7% share price decline otherwise shows. While we can’t tell if this is the action of one trader, but a look at the footprint left by time and sales data indicates to us that a premium seller is content to wear the risk of a further decline in shares at the conglomerate beneath $25.80. An investor appears...

  • Top Ten: MarketWatch's top stories of the week, Aug. 11-15

    (Fri, 15 Aug 2008 18:07:00 -0500)

This has been a time of misunderstandings and miscalculations. For the past week we have been treated by General Electric Co.'s NBC network to an extravaganza of television from Beijing. By all accounts, ratings have been very strong even though there are so many commercial breaks that coverage of the Olympic Games sometimes feels incoherent.

  • Friday's Fiscal Funnies: Java, java, jing, jing

    (Fri, 15 Aug 2008 12:42:00 -0500)

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- It's hard selling cars in a recession. Just ask the guy in the ill-fitting blazer who descends on you when you when you're within spitting distance of the lot. For those precious few who are in the market for a new car, with leases harder to get and purchasing power harder to come by, what's a buyer to do? One Cincinnati senior, apparently an avid coffee drinker, used his spare change -- 16 coffee cans full - to make an $8,000 payment on a new Chevy pick-up truck. James Jones paid the rest of the $16,000...

  • Oppenheimer sees uncertain future for industrial companies

    (Thu, 14 Aug 2008 08:51:32 -0500)

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Industrial investors may want to wait a little longer before jumping back in the sectort with gusto, according to a Thursday note from Oppenheimer. Though second-quarter earnings growth among industrial names was "solid" and up 17% year over year, tight credit markets, a weak U.S. economy and elevated energy costs make for an uncertain outlook, the investment firm said. "Companies continue to expect slowing nonresidential construction markets, with no sign of relief for residential markets, likely lasting through mid-'09 or late '09, and have noted Europe showing increasing signs of weakening," Oppenheimer said. However, Copper Industries...
