    Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited (TSX: FFH)(NYSE: FFH) announced today that it has acquired, through its subsidiaries, 466,900 common shares of Ridley Inc. (TSX: RCL), bringing its total holdings in the company to 10,000,330 shares or approximately 70.16 % of the total common shares outstanding. The shares were purchased by private agreement for investment purposes. Fairfax continually reviews its investment alternatives and may purchase additional shares of Ridley Inc. from time to time in accordance with applicable laws.

    Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited (TSX: FFH)(NYSE: FFH) announced today that it has acquired, through its subsidiaries, 1,582,900 Class A units of The Brick Group Income Fund, bringing its total holdings in the Fund to 7,521,700 units or approximately 17.52 % of the total Class A units outstanding. The units were purchased through the facilities of the Toronto Stock Exchange for investment purposes. Fairfax continually reviews its investment alternatives and may purchase additional units of The Brick Group Income Fund from time to time in accordance with applicable laws.

    Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. (FFH) reported a more than ten-fold gain in its credit default swap [CDS] investments, selling C$3.22-billion in CDS in the third quarter for C$574.5-million in cash after paying just C$53-million. Fairfax is benefiting from wise bets such as one on the demise of American International Group Inc. (AIG).

    As of September 19, 2008, the company said it had C$12.87-billion in the derivatives that act as insurance in case a company defaults on its bonds. Fairfax...

    I ran a screen for financials with market caps above $900m that trade in the US and trade below current book value. I then removed some of the more obscure names to narrow down the list and make it more succinct.

    Four times a year, hedge funds & asset managers with > $100 million AUM (assets under management) are required to report to the SEC their holdings from the previous quarter. I check these 13F filings quarterly just to get a sense as to where these funds are putting their money sector wise. If you just sit down and do some simple number crunching between last quarter's 13F and this quarter's 13F, you can see exactly where these funds have been moving their money. 

    Please note, these 13F's should be treated as a lagging indicator simply because...
