General Electric (GE) is the conglomerate involved in technology, media, and financial services. The stock has a P/E of 14, a PEG of 1.22 and pays a yield of 4.20%.
The accompanying table presents a quarterly update of my Highly Defensive PerformIdex, with an average beta of 0.72 and a market cap-weighted total return of 7.9% over the past year, outpacing the overall market and ETF peer group -- except for Vanguard Consumer Staples (VDC) ETF with an 8% total return over this period. Two companies received buyout offers in the past three months, including Genentech (DNA) and Anheuser-Busch (BUD), which were replaced by Amgen (AMGN) and Brown-Forman (BF-B), respectively.

After the recent volatility in the markets (S&P 500 +2.9% on Tuesday, -1.8% yesterday) some of these stocks are on the move. BAC had traded at its theoretical high of $34 and has declined over the last five days (through Wednesday) into it "normal" range. XOM continues to show weakness as it is 4.7% below the lower end of its range while JNJ is approaching its theoretical high.
Is this round two of the price of oil vs. the Dow Industrials? Will the effects on the Dow of the 1973 Oil Crisis repeat itself? There are several similarities and differences. One similarity, which got me thinking, was that the percentage increase in oil prices was similar to today – albeit it happened slower this time.
