  • Dow Member Changes Since the 10/02 Low

    (Thu, 20 Nov 2008 10:34:00 -0500)

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is still about 15% above the bear market closing low on October 9th, 2002, but half of the index's current members are now down since then.  Below we highlight each Dow member's percentage change since 10/9/02.  As shown, McDonald's (MCD) is up the most at 241%, followed by Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Exxon Mobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX), and Caterpillar (CAT).  Surprisingly, financial giant JP Morgan (JPM) is also one of the best performers with a gain of 108%.

General Motors (GM) is, not surprisingly, down the most since...

Scientific gizmo-maker Agilent Technologies reported better than expected earnings for its fiscal Q4. On its FQ408 conference call, the test and measurement equipment manufacturer weighs in on the Wimax vs. LTE debate, the semi-conductor market and on China’s manufacturing sector.

Here's what's happening, as you probably know. Young people don't bother with landlines (unless they live beyond cell coverage); they just use their mobile phones or Skype for...

  • Network DVR: First Challenge of a Connected Future

    (Mon, 17 Nov 2008 04:03:15 -0500)

    Shelly Palmer submits:

One important vision of the future of video distribution is the concept of making content available to consumers, WIWWIWWIW, "What I want, where I want, when I want." To accomplish this distribution goal, service providers will have to store content in a central location and transcode (prepare) it for distribution to a plurality of devices.

Just think of the various screen sizes in your world. Cell phone 2 ½" diagonal, PDA 3 ½" diagonal, Video Monitor in the back of the SUV 9" diagonal, laptop 15" diagonal, living room HDTV 42" diagonal, etc. Just making video available...

    Dan Rayburn submits:

North Dakota Senator Byron Dorgan plans to once again reintroduce a bill in January that would stop Internet providers from blocking certain kinds of web content. Senator Dorgan and Senator Olympia Snowe already introduced a similar bill together in January of 2007, referred to as the Internet Freedom Preservation Act, but as an amendment to a larger video franchise reform bill. That bill ended with the vote to add it to the bill as an 11-11 tie, meaning the amendment did not pass.
