In this time of difficult credit conditions, it could make sense to evaluate companies with plenty of cash. One way to measure cash is to subtract all liabilities and see if there is any cash left (Net Cash).
If a company has Net Cash, they could pay off any and all debts and other reported liabilities, and have money left over.

Japanese stocks and funds struggled throughout most of 2007. Broadly speaking, ADRs and U.S.-listed ETFs fared modestly better thanks to some yen appreciation, but still, a majority of stocks and all but two funds were negative for the year.
There were some winners, with the top-5 performers all posting double-digit gains, led by Mitsui & Co.'s (MITSY) 42% return. Rounding out the top five were: Makita (MKTAY) +35%, Sony (SNE) +27%, Hitachi (HIT) +17% and Internet Initiative Japan (IIJI) +17%.
Japanese ADRs trading on the NYSE/NASDAQ were further negatively impacted by the weak yen, despite the Nikkei 225 reaching a seven-year high last week and holding 18,000.
Financial stocks came under selling pressure as expected. Millea Holdings (MLEA) in particular fell on profit-taking.
Mega-banks Mitsubishi UFJ FG (MTU) and Mizuho FG (MFG) both lost more than 5% for the week.
Nearly 80% (22 of 28) of Japanese ADRs trading on the NYSE/NASDAQ posted a weekly loss. Earnings season in Japan so far has not been very impressive and guidance continues to be conservative, as widely expected.
On average, the 28 Japanese ADRs lost a combined 1.8% last week. For the year, they are barely in positive territory, up a combined average 0.3%.
To make matters worse, there was a lot of wait-and-see (resulting in lighter volume) and preemptive Golden Week selling.

Indeed, the disparity between bullish views about Europe and bearish views about the US was the widest ever recorded in the most recent Merrill Survey. Global investor favorites for the next 12 months are now Europe, Japan, Emerging Markets and the US, in that order.

The Nikkei extended its rally to five days last Monday, but Japanese stocks struggled the rest of the week. ADRs were no exception, as two-thirds of the 28 listed on the NYSE or trading on the Nasdaq finished the week lower.
Japanese ADRs lost a combined average 1.6% last week, which was also the end of the fourth quarter and fiscal year. Two weeks ago, all 28 ADRs were positive for the week.
The quarter end, the recent five day rally and the fact stocks went ex-dividend during the week all resulted in broader weakness. The only real buying was perhaps window...
