    Market Folly submits:

(Note: Before reading this update, make sure you check out the preface to the series we're doing on Hedge Fund 13F's here).

This is the Third Quarter 2008 edition of our ongoing hedge fund tracking series. • Repricing Employee Stock Options: Disingenuous and Disrespectful

    (Wed, 19 Nov 2008 05:09:58 -0500)

    Dan Pritch submits:

According to this article and others, Silicon Valley companies primarily, are looking to reprice employee stock option grants with more attractive money options in order to retain talent and "motivate" employees.

I'll get right to the point. Look at this mess of an economy! How's keeping your job for "motivation"? Unemployment's on its way to 8% or higher. I've seen my company's shares sink to ten year lows and now my options are worthless. Each year, if you perform, you get a new grant (or even in between if you execute a spectacular project). Unless...

  • Tech May Be a Wreck, But This Isn't 2001

    (Sun, 16 Nov 2008 13:57:00 -0500)

ab analytical servicesAlan Brochstein, CFA submits:

I have been negative on Tech as a sector relative to the market as a whole, but I am no longer so. I shared my reasons over a year ago (too early), arguing that the strong balance sheets and high exposure to international sales were masking high valuation and significant but under-appreciated exposure to the consumer.  I noted that recessions had never been kind to tech stocks and this one wouldn't likely be different.

    2008 hasn't been kind...

    Greentech Media submits:

    By Michael Kanellos

There are a lot of financially sound reasons to adopt LEED standards for your next building. The resale value of the building will climb faster than ordinarily. Spare space that needs to be rented out will go for a premium. Operations costs and energy bills will additionally likely be far lower than they would if you built a conventional headquarters. (Jeanne Clinton, Clean Energy Advisor, California Public Utilities Commission, says green building has a negative cost because the financial gains will outweigh the initial expense.)

    F5 Networks (FFIV)

    Enterprise Spending

Another tidbit we wanted to relay with regard to recent changes in enterprise spending and specifically over at F5 Networks. We are hearing from contacts that FFIV has placed a freeze on hiring. This comes after the company pre-released on Oct 7th its 4Q08 earnings (FFIV now expects revenues to be $171.43 M, slightly below guided range of $174M.) While not a surprise this is further evidence of a slowdown on the enterprise side (FFIV makes network load balancing equipment).
